About This Quote

A man, whilst he is dreaming, believes in his dream; he is undeceived only when he is awakened from his slumber. For example, a man is walking through the woods and falls into an enchanted forest. He believes that the trees and the forest will protect him against all dangers and make him feel safe. He gets up and wanders around for a while and then feels something pierce his foot.

At first, he thinks nothing of it and continues to explore the forest until he finds a bright magic lamp. He touches it and finds himself not in the forest but in the middle of a desert with thousands of people staring at him. He looks down and realizes that he has been standing on a pillar of sand that has been lifted high by some unknown force.
